Pet Insurance

There are insurance policies to cover vet costs for rabbits and exotic pets. We are unable to recommend specific companies, but some providers are listed below. Important points to consider when comparing policies include any excess to pay per claim, the amount available per claim and the total claim limit per year.

CJ Hall Vets do not accept direct claims from insurance companies. We ask for payment at the time of treatment. If you are unable to pay at the time of treatment, it may be possible to make alternative arrangements - however this must be discussed with the vet ideally before or at least at the time of initial consultation. Please note most insurers are not able to indicate whether a claim will be paid in advance by a quick phone call. It may be possible to get a ‘ pre-treatment authorisation’ to indicate whether the insurers will cover the claim. This is a lengthy process however requiring us to submit clinical histories from ourselves, referring vets (if applicable) together with details and estimates of treatment costs. We would suggest allowing a week for such a process - as such, this may not be appropriate for urgent treatment.

To make a claim, please send us a claim form - make sure you complete your parts of the form. We will then complete the vet part of the form and submit the claim with the relevant invoices and clinical history. There is no need for you to submit invoices or clinical histories to us. This is an online process with some insurance companies. Unlike other vets, we do not charge you for submitting an insurance claim. Please allow several weeks to process the claim.

Please note that the decision to pay a claim is entirely at the discretion of your insurer. Common reasons for declining claims include

  • the condition arising before or soon after the insurance starting

  • previous treatment for the same or related condition

  • claims for dental treatment in rabbits / rodents and egg related issues in birds - insurers vary in what they cover

Please check the wording of your insurance policy carefully, especially for any exclusions. In the event a claim is not paid by the insurers, you will be liable for the cost of treatment.
